Weight Gain - I've Been Assaulted by Salt!

One of the major contributory causes of the obesity epidemic is the fact that we eat far too much salt. We've become addicted to it - perhaps that's not entirely fair. We've become addicted to salt because we eat too much processed food, which contains high levels of salt, would be more accurate.

Why is there so much salt in processed food? It's added because it helps to extend shelf life and because it helps to enhance taste. Are these really good enough reasons for adding so much salt to processed food? Most definitely not!

Despite endless campaigns and lobbying, food manufacturers continue to load salt into their products. The nation's waist band continues to grow. Whilst it's not entirely fair to just blame food manufacturers for the weight of the nation, they must shoulder some of the responsibility.

Ultimately we are responsible for what we put into our mouths. We can read food labels and we can take decisions about what we buy. We could quite easily decide not to buy products that were high in salt. A drop in sales would soon have food manufacturers rushing round to find less salty alternatives. Our lack of self-responsibility is the biggest problem.

How much salt do we eat and how much should we eat? 4g - 6g per day is the recommended daily allowance (RDA). We eat closer to 12g! Be careful, some manufacturers are less than straightforward with their labelling. They use the word 'sodium' instead of salt. So what, you may think, but 1g of sodium is worth 2.5g of salt! It's easy to be fooled.

So where is all this salt? Fast foods and ready meals are top of the list for salt content, but it's also in some very unexpected places. It's in candy, cereals, baked beans and bread, to name but a few. In fact we get more than 25% of our daily salt intake from bread, rolls, bagels and burger buns. Salt is essential in the baking of bread, but the quantities of salt being used by some bakeries in the baking process is close to scandalous.

We do need salt in our diet, but in small quantities. Too much salt causes our body to retain too much fluid and this in turn can lead to high blood pressure. This puts us at greater risk of heart and stroke. It also makes us thirsty. As the signals for thirst and hunger are very similar, we often answer the thirst signal with food. Weight gain is the result.

It's no use complaining about food manufacturers, it's really up to us as individuals to change our behaviour. We need to learn the habit - the slim habit, of being aware of the amount of salt we eat and the type of food we buy. It's not difficult. It'll help you lose weight and stay healthy. That's quite an incentive.

We did come across some independent consumer reviews that complained about the cost of this program, and some reviewers even noted that this program was, as they said, not worth the money. Best Exercise For Losing Weight - Check This Out!

What's the best exercise for losing weight? This is certainly at the top of the FAQ's I've been asked throughout over a decade of working with clients. The answer is simple. The best exercise for losing weight is the exercise that burns the most calories. Why is that? Well, let's backtrack a little bit.

In order to lose weight, you have to create a calorie deficit. Calories - which are basically units of energy - are stored as fat when they're consumed in excess. To lose fat, you have to burn calories - it's as simple as that. So logically, as mentioned above, the best exercise for losing weight is the exercise that burns up the most calories.

Now, while the concept is pretty straight forward, determining which exercises burn the most calories isn't so clear cut. Reason being is while exercise "A" may burn more calories than exercise "B" when the exercise is being performed, exercise "B" may boost your metabolic rate (the rate at which you burn calories) for long after the exercise has been completed.

So, in order to get the best fat burning effects from your workouts, you have to think beyond that single workout. I'll cut straight to the chase here. Cardiovascular training burns more calories during the actual workout while resistance training (working with weights) burns more calories long after the workout has been completed.

The trick is to use a workout style that incorporates both. The solution is to do what's known as "circuit training". Effective circuit training workouts blend resistance training and cardio together by cutting out the rest periods in between exercises. Circuit training also elevates hormones -specifically levels of growth hormone - which in turn, simply put - help you burn more fat.

So What Are The Best Exercises?

You want to choose exercises that work multiple muscle groups at once. Think of all those exercises that you hate doing because they're hard. Yes, I'm sure you know where I'm going with this. Those are the exercises that you should be doing! Squats, lunges, bench press, pull ups - the list goes on and on.

Here's how to remove body fat from your body using some simple principles that result in big changes. The "experts" are making weight loss too complicated for you. It's not complicated. In this 2 minute article, I'm going to give you 2 ways to get rid of body fat that are pretty easy and straight to the point. Read this now if you're sick and tired of being overweight.

Remove Body Fat

1. Walking on an incline

Whether it's a hill, stairs, or a treadmill that you incline.... walking on some sort of incline is the fastest "easy way" to lose weight. Like I said earlier, it's straight to the point. Nothing complicated here. If you walk a lot already, but only do it on a flat surface, you probably are not getting weight loss results as fast as you'd like. Well, you just need to make this 1 tiny change to lose weight fast.

I recommend that you do this type of walking from 10-25 minutes non-stop. If you have stairs in your house, this makes it totally simple. Just walk up and down them non-stop for at least 10 minutes everyday... or at least 5 days a week.

2. Cut out the sodas and coffee

I'm sure you already know this, but you're having a hard time actually doing it. Before I tell you how, I want to make sure that you know that diet sodas are included. You CAN'T drink them.
They have aspartame in them and this unnatural sugar substitute actually stimulates your hunger so that you eat way more than normal.

What you can do is what I did. I drank water with 2 packets of Stevia (a NATURAL sugar substitute). Within 3 days, I never drank anymore lemonade or Mountain Dew. I have no urge to. The Stevia gives me the sweet taste that I crave... yet it's healthy for me. Now if you want to get rid of coffee, just drink Stevia water and take 1 caffeine pill.

You'll save thousands of calories a month... if not a week, doing this.

Slim Down!

Here's how to slim down really fast. If you're looking to drop pounds and inches and of course a bunch of weight, then take 2 minutes to read all of this article. I'll share with you some great slimming techniques that you probably aren't doing right now. So read this now.

Slim Down

1. Do vacuum poses daily

These things are all about sucking in your belly really hard and holding it for a few moments. I'm sure you've done this before, except it wasn't part of a slimming program. Look, I've had clients lose 3 inches off their bellies doing this exercise for just a month. It's powerful and it's proven effective. Nothing comes close to it if you're trying to flatten your belly and tone up.

Do these during commercial breaks. I recommend at least 5 minutes a day... but 10 will get you better results.

2. Walking up and down your stairs

If you have stairs in your home... PERFECT. If not, I hope you have some stairs nearby. This shouldn't be a problem if you live in a condo or apartment building. Anyway, this is quite simple. Take 15 minutes of your time each day and devote it to walking up and down those stairs. The key to having this work great for toning and tightening is to do this NON-STOP.

I have a lot of clients tell me they already do this. They walk up and down stairs enough each day. Maybe so, but I know they don't devote a full 15 minutes non-stop to it. Just do it. You'll be glad you did. Just trust me on this one.

1. The butt

The butt is simple to deal with. Do isometric butt squeezes while you lie down watching tv. All you do is squeeze your butt together as hard as possible and hold it for as long as you can. Do this for a total of 5+ minutes each and every day. Your butt will start taking on a better shape and become more and more firm.

2. Thighs

Jump on a mini-trampoline. This is great for reducing the appearance of cellulite, but it's also great for firming and toning your legs. My clients have gotten great results doing jumping jacks on it for 20 minutes a day. A lot of my clients do this during commercials, 3 minutes at a time.

3. Triceps (back of the arms)

Do close-handed pushups while on your knees. The reason why your hands should be close is because this targets your triceps a lot more than if you did them with the normal hand placement. I recommend that you keep your hands about 8-9 inches apart when doing these. Do 3 sets a day, every other day. Do as many as you can for each set.

Target these 3 female fat zones with these exercises and you should notice an improvement within 10-14 days.

These are common sense steps really, but many dieters overlook them in their quest for the next miracle weight loss fad. And using natural methods doesn't mean that the weight will take forever to come off either - while two pounds a week is a safe rate to lose steadily at, many people will experience faster weight loss in the first week or two. Much of this will be water loss, but it still provides great motivation to continue.

Belly Fat - A Toxic Time Bomb

What's your story, a bit chubby round the middle or even a bit of a belly? If you're looking down at your tummy right now or you've just tried to suck your tummy in, you probably fall into the latter category. You've been found out!

Should you be worried about your tummy? You probably know that you need to lose a few pounds, but is it something that you should lie awake at night and worry about? Unfortunately, the answer is 'yes'!

Did you know that the size of your waist is a very good indicator of your state of health? Putting it a little more bluntly, if you're carrying a lot of extra weight round your middle, you could double your risk of an early death. It's a scary thought, isn't it?

The fat you accumulate round your middle is different to the fat on other parts of your body. It is called 'toxic fat'. Toxic because it secretes what are called 'inflammatory proteins'. These proteins contribute to a build up of atherosclerotic plaque in your arteries - in other words they cause them to clog up. The result is cardiovascular disease and a possible early demise.
You don't have to be 'fat' to have a belly. Some people with a normal BMI (Body Mass Index) sometimes have a belly, and they too are equally at risk from heart disease.

So what waist measurements should you be looking at? Ideally men should have a waist that does not exceed 37 inches (94cm) and women, 32 inches (81.3cm). Anything over that would signal an increased risk of diabetes and heart disease.

It's a sad reality that there is always a price to be paid for excess and lack of physical activity. On a more positive note, it's never too late to do something about it. You ignore the warning signs at your peril.

Large bellies don't suddenly appear. They are the result of many years of 'development'. They won't disappear overnight, but disappear they must and they must not reappear. Permanent weight loss can be achieved most successfully by changing your behaviour. If you then learn new habits - slim habits, you will be able to achieve permanent weight loss and say goodbye to your belly. You need a weight loss program - not a diet - that will help you to make the essential changes that could save your life. Time for change.

Exercises For Stomach Fat Reduction and Total Body Weight Loss

Here are a few good exercises for stomach fat reduction that will also help with total body weight loss. Do these and you'll be dropping weight and toning your whole waist area. I'm not going to give you something complicated. What's the point of doing that? I'm going to give you tips that just about anyone can do.

Exercises for Stomach Fat Reduction

1. Bodyweight squats with a jump

Ok, do this... do a bodyweight squat in your home and as you're squatting upwards, launch yourself. Jump up. Do these as fast as you can. Start with 3 sets of 10 reps and adjust according to how your body is reacting. This movement is great for weight loss because it gets the whole body involved. The fast pace makes it even more of a weight loss exercise.

You can do these 3 times a week.

2. Fake jumping rope

You don't even need a jump rope for this. Just do little mini-jumps of 1-2 inches and mimic the hand movements as if you're really using a jump rope. This takes the coordination factor out of this great exercise. Do this for 1 minute at a time... for a total of 5 minutes a day. You can do these 4 days a week.

3. Jumping jacks

This gets the whole body, it's simple, and it's totally uncomplicated for everyone. I'm going to give you more options with what you can do here. You can do these for 1-3 minutes at a time and you can do them for 10-20 minutes a day. You figure out how to fit that in. It's not hard. I use tv commercials to get my workouts completed everyday.

1. Do High Intensity Intervals

Look, that slow, easy, and boring type of cardio like jogging is over. Not only does it take up a lot of your time, but the results are minimal at best. The quicker way to lose weight is using fast bursts of exercise. I'll use running as an example. Say you normally jog 2 miles a day. Instead, what you'd want to do is run at about 85-90% full intensity for 10 seconds. You follow that up with either walking or slow jogging for 50 seconds.

This type of walking and jogging is called "active rest".

Diet Meals

1. 3 scrambled eggs with chopped onions and 1/2 can of black beans

This is the perfect breakfast as far as I'm concerned. In fact, I eat it almost everyday. So I actually do what I recommend. Why is this meal so great? It's high in protein and fiber. You need this because it'll keep you full longer than breakfasts that have a ton of carbs in them. One thing before I go to the next one, be sure to cook the black beans for about 5 meals. Don't eat them right out of the can.

2. 4 ounces chicken breast with 1/2 can of black beans on a bed of lettuce

Again, this is a high protein dish. I call it a "protein salad". Fills you up. Oh, another thing I left out about protein. It does 2 important things that are powerful for weight loss. It suppresses your appetite while speeding up your metabolism. THAT'S BIG! Remember it even if you don't use these meals.

3. Lean beef with broccoli

This makes for a good dinner. Broccoli is most definitely a SUPERFOOD. I know a lot of people have a hard time eating broccoli by itself. If you're 1 of them, I recommend either drizzling a little BBQ sauce on it or some sour cream.

5 Surprising Reasons You're Putting on Weight

We all know what puts on weight - too much fattening, calorie-laden food, too little exercise. But what if you're doing all the right things... eating a healthy diet and working out regularly and you're still putting on weight? Nothing is more maddening, more likely to chip away at your hard won resolve than the number on the scale going up instead of down. Before you give in and give up ask yourself if any of these unexpected reasons could be behind the scale moving in the wrong direction.

Reason #1: You're not getting enough sleep.

Surprising but true, and it makes sense if you think about it. Your body works best when it is well rested and full recharged. When you don't get enough sleep, besides feeling the fatigue, you don't handle stress as well - little things seem to drive you crazy. This makes it much more likely you'll each for comfort food - we all have our favorites. Not only that, lack of sleep makes our bodies more ready and willing to store fat - not the best thing for losing weight.

If you find yourself feeling fatigued, being irritable, nodding off or just have a lingering low energy level, your body is trying to tell you that it isn't getting the sleep it needs. What to do?
Start by making changes in your sleep habits so that you help yourself wind down and fall asleep. Going to bed and getting up at the same time each day, even on vacation and holidays is critical. You might also work on getting enough exercise during the day (but not too close to bedtime) so that you burn off excess tension. It's important to pay attention to your sleep environment too - make it dark, quiet and a comfortable, constant temperature.

"Add about 15 minutes to your bedtime and see how you feel," suggests Michelle May, MD, author of Am I Hungry? What to Do When Diets Don't Work, "Continue to experiment with additional 15 minute increments until you find the amount of sleep that is right for you."

Reason #2: You're under stress.

Stress has become an expected part of modern living. Work schedules. School schedules. Hectic commutes. Rushing everywhere and always ten minutes behind. It's no wonder we're all dealing with the effects of this state of constant arousal on our bodies. Stress does harm to both body and mind, and has been noted as a contributing factor to many serious diseases.

What stress does is start a chain of biochemical processes - storing fuel, slowing down metabolism and releasing chemicals like cortisol, leptin and other hormones that are already linked to obesity. Not only that, stress leaves us open to eating things that taste good... that feel good... but are in truth not at all good for the body.

Susan Bowerman, MS, RD, assistant director of the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition, says stress eaters want high-carbohydrate foods because these foods trigger an increase in the brain chemical serotonin. This has a calming effect on the body. "It is almost like self-medicating," she says. "Many people binge on starchy foods to make themselves feel better."

I know I'm guilty of this at times. If you think this might be part of your problem, getting more exercise will help. By doing something physical, you help your body to burn up excess energy that might otherwise be turned inward. Relaxation techniques, daily meditation or other practices are also highly effective ways to manage everyday stress.

Reason #3: You're taking a particular medication.

If you've suddenly gained five pounds in a month, without a change in your healthy, active lifestyle, you might want to take a look inside your medicine cabinet. Medicines, prescription or not, have side effects and weight gain can be one of them.

Drugs prescribed to treat depression or mood disorders; seizures, migraines, blood pressure and diabetes come with the potential to have you putting on weight. That weight can be as much as 10 pounds a month. Other treatments like hormone replacement therapy, oral contraceptives and steroids are known to contribute to gaining weight. Even heartburn medications may be to blame for that growing number on the scale.

If you suspect a medication, talk with your pharmacist and doctor to see what your options might be. It's important to evaluate the few extra pounds in terms of the benefits you're getting from the drug. Never stop taking a medication because you think it's making you fat - this can be dangerous. Talk with your doctor first.

"Rarely is the problem solved with a change in meds," cautions Dr. May "These things can contribute, but rarely are the sole cause of the weight gain."

What if you must stay on a medicine that is known to put on weight? Be sure to keep your lifestyle - diet and activity level - as healthy as possible. Drink plenty of fluids. Get the rest you need and manage that stress level so your body has the best chance of minimizing the effect of the drug on your system.

Reason #4: You have an (as yet) undiagnosed health condition.

As frightening as that sounds... the weight gain could be your first sign that something's up, and that you need to take action. Those extra pounds are a wake up call...

One of the most common conditions known to cause weight gain is hypothyroidism -your thyroid gland isn't making enough of a hormone the body needs. This affects the whole body - you feel tired and weak, your metabolism slows, you're putting on weight. These and other symptoms of hypothyroidism come on slowly, over time, so that you might miss them at first. But leave hypothyroidism untreated and you raise not only your cholesterol levels, but also the risk of heart attack or stroke.

Less common is a condition known as Cushing's syndrome. This is an excess of the hormone cortisol and comes along with a long list of symptoms. The weight gain of Cushing's is typically around your middle and upper back, and you may also notice a rounding of the face (known as moon face).

A visit to your doctor is in order if you're at all concerned. A physical exam and frank discussion about your symptoms are an important first step. Don't minimize anything, and write out questions before hand if you think you'll get flustered or forget them. Blood tests can be run and confirm a diagnosis (or refute one) in a matter of days. Once you know what's happening, you'll be in the best position possible to take steps to treat the problem and move forward.

Reason #5: You're in menopause.

Only a culprit for women, we all reach this milestone at different points, usually at midlife when we're far less active than we were in our 20's and 30's. Beyond the hormone surges (that can have us depressed, overeating and not sleeping) and hot flashes, there is a natural slowing of metabolism that comes as part of aging.

What you need to do to fight this is increase the amount of lean muscle mass you have in your body. This will enhance your metabolism, so that you burn calories more like you did when you were younger. It also helps hold off bone loss that can be crippling if left unchecked. The key is being active so that you can work to build this lean muscle mass. Weight lifting and strength training both can be amazingly helpful and won't have you looking like a bodybuilder.

Getting more of the right kind of exercise, as well as eating a healthy diet where you watch your calorie intake and include sources rich in calcium and vitamin D is the best way to fight putting on weight that the menopause is trying to give you.

Fat Loss - Fast Food Junkie to Health Style Savvy

When overweight individuals are told they have to change their eating styles, the dread that comes with this thought is at varying degrees. In other words, some people's pre-weight loss eating habits are not as bad as what someone else's is. Their lack of losing fat may have to do with some other factors. It's the fast food junkies that face pure panic when they are told they must change their eating habits. Part of the problem, and part of the failure for some people is they try to make the transition too quickly. Just as some people can quit smoking cold turkey, while others have to wean themselves off.

If you have tried all kinds of methods to try to switch to a healthy diet and it has failed, then try this slower but perhaps more effective method.

Start in the morning and plan your meals for today. Don't consider what is good or what is bad for you at this particular moment. Don't even think about the fact that you are starting a life style change. Now write out a list of healthy foods for each of those meals. Use five food items for each meal. Next, pick out one healthy food that you like the best out of each one of the categories. Now remove one of the unhealthier foods and substitute it with one of the healthy foods in each group. Continue doing this on a regular basis until you have eventually replaced all of the unhealthy foods with the healthy ones. This is just one of the many innovative ways you can become health style savvy. Don't worry if it takes a while between each transition that's fine, just stick with it, eventually you won't even remember what fast foods were. You will naturally have moved to healthier eating.
