Calorie Journal

A calorie journal is probably one of the single most important tools that every serious dieter should have. Any person who is truly serious about staying committed to their diet program should have one in their possession, whether it is a paper book, a computer software program, or an on line service on the Internet.

A calorie journal is a highly effective means of holding yourself accountable to your diet progress. Studies have shown that people who maintain a diet journal are more likely to succeed and are less likely to veer off of the diet.

Yet even those who do veer off course and mess up on their diets find it much easier to bounce back and resume the diet than those who do not maintain a calorie journal.

What a calorie journal does for you is not only help you maintain accountability but it also educates you. As you track what you eat and what exercise you engage in, you can see what works and what doesn't. If you didn't lose as much weight as you wanted to this week, you can easily refer back to the journal and see where you might have gone wrong and be able to identify those areas where you might find some room for improvement.

The essential elements of any type of weight loss journal should include a list of the foods that you ate, how many calories, carbohydrates, fats, proteins (or any other attributes which you seek to track, depending on the type of diet you are following). It should also allow you to journal your exercise routines: How much cardio did you do? How many calories did you burn? How long did you stay in your target heart rate? How many reps of weight did you lift in how many sets? You should be able to track your weight as you weigh yourself in periodically.
