11 Energy Producing Diet Tricks

By Deb Bixler

Increase Metabolism To Lose Weight

If you are reducing the amount of food/calories that you eat in a day and feeling tired all the time, then chances are your body lacks the calories to provide enough stamina to get you through the day. Calories are literally energy. A calorie is a unit of measure that measures the amount of energy you receive from a specific food. Dieting is a balancing act between consuming enough calories or units of energy to maintain an energetic lifestyle, and few enough calories to lose weight. The only way to slim down is to burn more calories than you consume. This is accomplished by consuming fewer calories, as well as by staying active and exercising to burn calories. Dieting to a point of being tired is counter-productive in weight loss as you will become weak and tired, then not be as active.

Create Energy While Losing Weight

Eat 6 small meals per day instead of 3 big meals.

Do not eliminate a food group from your diet (like eat no-carb or no-fat diets).

Include protein, carb, fat and fiber in every meal.

Eat high fiber meals.

Drink at least half your body weight in ounces of plain water daily.

Avoid non-nutritive sweeteners (even though these are no-calorie, it is proven that they actually set you up for craving sugary foods.* There are plenty of studies showing this-this is one recent one: Purdue University Study 2008)

Eat a small portion of carbs before bed. About an hour before bedtime eat a small bowl of yogurt, whole grain crackers or oatmeal to improve serotonin during sleep.

Drink caffeine in small portions rather than in big cups. This will keep your energy boosted but not spiked.

Get a good night's sleep. Sleep deprivation can actually increase hunger.

Don't drink your calories. It is always better to eat real food, such as an orange, instead of orange juice.

Avoid chemical-laden foods. If you do not know what it is, then chances are it is a chemical.
Chemicals have no nutritive value and cause food cravings.

These guidelines should be the cornerstone of any weight loss program. Dieting is a balancing act; without energy you will not burn calories efficiently. Effective diet programs, diet programs that keep the weight off, take advantage of a balance between increasing your metabolism and reducing calorie consumption.
