How to Maintain a Healthy Weight and Enjoy What You Eat
By Marjorie WooleryThere is no denying that eating is one of life's pleasures. In this regard, some folks indulge just a bit too much in this particular pleasure and undoubtedly pay the price of their excess in the currency of pounds, extra pounds that is. There are a lot of people whose main focus is on achieving a healthy weight. To do so one of the most important lessons is learning how to enjoy eating without going overboard.
Finding the answer to why people overeat is not a simple task. There are various biological and emotional reasons as to why this happens. It is fundamental, however, to learn to interpret the built-in signals of your body that let you know when you are full. This will help those who overeat to find a way to break the cycle. There are varying degrees of fullness and it is important to endeavour to stop eating when you feel pleasantly full instead of continuing until you need to unbutton your belt. It is also important to be closely in tune with your bodies and understand whether you are truly hungry or not before eating. Mindless eating is one of the major culprits of weight gain.
Taking the time to enjoy your meal instead of scoffing the food down is equally essential. This will help the satiety centre of the brain to trigger the appropriate response telling you when you are full. There is a common misconception that you have to avoid entire groups of foods altogether to maintain a healthy weight and a healthy lifestyle. I disagree. I think it helps to eat just about anything but in moderation. If you know that you can have one slice of chocolate cake instead of none at all then the urge to devour half of a chocolate cake disappears.
I also highly recommend that you make your dining experience as enjoyable as possible. Let go of the mindset that eating is simply a means to achieve weight loss. Research and try out new and different recipes from different places. Experiment with new flavours and new spices. Jazz up an old favourite by adding a dash of curry. In short, add some adventure to this element of life as well.
Change your thinking and look at eating in a new and different light. Let it be about discovering and savouring something new and different. Listen to your body, eat when you are hungry and stop when you are comfortably full. Remember that eating can indeed be a pleasure without excessive indulgence.
