Gastric Sleeve Surgery - Benefits and Potential Problems

Gastric sleeving is a form of weight loss surgery which is gaining momentum. The complete name for the procedure is Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy but it is widely known by the more common term "gastric sleeve" or "sleeve gastrectomy". They all describe the same procedure.

Promoters of the procedure boast several specific advantages over other types of laparoscopic weight loss surgery. They will tell you that, unlike "lap-band" surgery, gastric sleeving does not include implanting a foreign object in your body, which also means that there is no need for later adjustment or filling after surgery. This means less followup medical visits and therefore, greater personal convenience and getting back to normal life much faster.

But is it all it's cracked up to be?

First, let's understand exactly what is involved and then discuss the implications. The procedure involves two things. The first is a significant reduction in the size of the stomach, while the second involves reducing the hormones that create a craving for food. The small intestine is unaltered, so digestion and absorption of nutrients is unhindered. However, your stomach normally has approximately a one litre capacity but this surgery can reduce that to about 100ml.

The impact on your eating habits could be quite significant. For example, if you once drunk from a normal size cup, you may have to purchase much smaller ones, because you may not be able to drink a whole cup. Your meal sizes may also diminish to almost a tenth of what you have been used to. That could amount to only a very small portion on a dinner plate.

This may seem attractive at first, but it could also mean you may not be able to physically consume sufficient food to provide normal nourishment and therefore, have to take nutritional supplements for the rest of your life.

Complications that can arise from the gastric sleeve procedure include internal leaking after the operation. This can cause septicemia which could be dangerous, if not life threatening.

The other important thing to remember, is that the procedure is irreversible. Once it's done, you have to live with the consequences for the rest of your life.

The Gastric Sleeve Resection as a stand-alone weight loss surgery is a new approach and still considered experimental by many bariatric surgeons and insurance companies. It is covered by some insurance companies, but not by others. Typically, insurance companies do not cover a procedure that they consider experimental.

It is often followed by a gastric bypass or duodenal switch after the patient has lost a significant amount of weight. Called a "staged" approach to weight loss surgery, this makes the second procedure less risky than it would have been had it been the first and only procedure.

Doctors point out that no obesity surgery is a cure-all. It's simply a tool to help patients cut portions and calories. The smaller stomach can enlarge again and weight loss can be regained.If this occurs the sleeve can be revised, but this requires another operation. This however is most uncommon and the reality is, that your "new" reduced stomach will be a lifelong blessing or curse.

How to Not Gain Weight While on Vacation

Vacations are not fun when you leave your healthy habits home. However it's tough to perfectly maintain a healthy lifestyle on the road, thus adding stress to the otherwise enjoyable trip.
here are a few tips to stay in shape and have less stress on your next vacation.

- Know that you are not going on vacation to work out. Many people plan on working out every day on vacation but unless your workout is part of the vacation (like running on the beach or hiking a mountain) plan on working out less. Bottom line: don't stress about down shifting your workouts. A week or two of doing a little less is not going to cause you to back track that much.

- Invest in some bands or suspension straps so you can set up a quick workout anywhere. It's much easier to fit in a quick 10-15 minutes than try and plan a day around an hour long workout. Body weight exercises are also a gem for adding in a quick bit of activity.

- Walk everywhere. You can experience the sights and culture of your destination a whole lot better on foot than from a car or bus, so try and be on foot as much as possible to maximize your experience.

-Try to make only one meal a day a restaurant meal. It drives me crazy to go on vacation and then spend half the day in restaurants. Not only is restaurant food more fattening, it also steals time away from your experience. So it pays to have a little travel cooler and keep it stocked from the local grocery store. You will save time, money and energy that can be spent on things other than food.

-Watch the excessive food and drink. No vacation is fun when you are hung over, or so full you feel like not moving for 3 hours. As I always say, try not to get hungry, nor full and your energy will stay high maximizing your relaxation and fun.

As I always say, a healthy lifestyle should enhance your life, not strain it. Vacations can in many ways be more stressful and harsh than staying home. So be prepared and have fun. You really can have it both ways.

* In some cities renting a bicycle can be faster and more convenient than using a car.
* Be sure to have a great backpack to store food and water during the day. This way you won't have to constantly search for food and settle for what you can find. (Ie the nearest burger joint)
* Relax! Vacations are supposed to be fun! Being too strict about a diet or exercise program will only take time and energy away from the experience for both you and your friends.
* If you are tackling an active vacation (like hiking in the Rockies or biking in Maine) be sure to do some conditioning a month or two before you go. Almost any activity during a vacation is going to be new and thus can really cause some soreness and stiffness to those who are not prepared.

Drinking water is important if you're trying to lose weight, studies show that thirst and hunger are triggered together. If you are dehydrated, this may be mistaken for hunger and one may eat when the body is actually craving fluid. I run a lot but my stomach still has fat, why?

Don't be fooled into thinking that running equals belly fat loss. When you run you are going to lose fat from you legs more than anywhere else because they are doing all the work and building the muscle. When a body part builds muscle it will begin to burn the fat off too.

Should I stop running then?

These extra pounds have a great impact on arms, tummy and bum. A lot of men and women complain about the surplus fat in the arm as it is unsightly. Generally, this arm fat dilemma is more faced by women rather than the men and so this article will focus more on the female perspective. Always remember there are numerous similar exercises which can be carried out by both men and women. Studies have shown that for a good outcome of weight loss, we must change our eating habits so that we eat less food overall but at the same take eat more healthily. Most of us would benefit from losing a little fat and gaining some muscle. However, it sounds easier than it is. Some say it isn't possible to lose fat and build muscle simultaneously. These five quick tips will help you lose the weight and get a flat stomach:

First, write down your goals. If you don't know what you are working towards you won't get there. Decide how much weight you want to lose by when and then tell yourself you are going to do it - make the commitment.

Then, you want to make sure that you are doing effective weight loss cardio. The most effective type of cardio to help you burn fat and lose weight is high intensity interval training. This type of cardio will get your heart rate up quickly and your body burning fat for up to 48 hours after your workout.

Thirdly, you need to start lifting weights. The more muscle mass you have on your body the more fat you will burn. The only way to get more muscle is to build it and you can build muscle by lifting weights. Find a workout program that works for you and if you have questions ask a trainer.

Lastly, and one of the most important factors to help you lose weight and get a flat stomach is to decrease the time between meals. The more often you eat, the faster your metabolism will be.
When you wait hours between meals your body enters 'starvation' mode and starts storing fat, instead of burning it. Once you start eating more often your body will continuously burn fat throughout the day, even without working out!

Healthy Eating Pattern - Aid on How to Boost Weight Loss

The usual way to reduce weight is to cut on calorie intake. How to cut on calories is often addressed by being strict with diet. But often, all these measures amount to nothing to help us on how to boost weight loss. Often, too, they end up being eating disorders. But there's good news on what healthy eating pattern to adapt to burn calorie and lose weight.

Ineffective Calorie and Fat Burning

The first thing we have to know about fat burning is the role of calories on how to boost weight loss. We need enough calories to burn fats. Hence, too rigid restrictions on calorie intake or programs on how to cut on calories seldom really work. Without the needed amount of calories, our bodies reduce their ability to burn fats. There's a diminishing-returns point with most strict calorie diets. You burn body fats for a while, but when you reach a certain peak, the fat burning maintains a flat-line, if not a downward trend.

Hence, you hear about the so-called yo-yo effect which excites fitness enthusiasts for a while due to marked fat reduction, but later reduces effect and puts them back to square one-being overweight again. You need enough calories to burn fats.

Is Strict Diet the Answer?

Obviously, any strict dieting can only have so much effect, and usually not for long. The eating pattern to adopt is eat what you want at the proper time. Eating time is really among the keys on how to boost weight loss and how to cut on calories effectively. The body is set to burn up calories during times we have programmed it to do so.

When we have set a time pattern for eating, we have to maintain it so that the body would get used to it. If we set breakfast at 6 in the morning, lunch at 12 noon, and supper at 5.30 in the afternoon, we have to make sure we keep those schedules daily. Upsetting them might also upset the body's metabolism and the timing set by the body for automatically activating fat-burning hormones. Thus, snacking in-between often upsets calorie burning.

The Healthy Eating Pattern

The healthy eating pattern then is not too much focus on strict dieting as it is on keeping a well-timed eating habit. Eat enough calorie-giving food, but eat them at the proper time when the body is ready to automatically use fat-burning hormones. This is an effective way on how to cut on calories and how to boost weight loss naturally. Mix this with fitness exercises and supplements and you have the right healthy eating pattern.

Steal These Two Habits of Slim, Fit People

Have you ever wondered how people who always seem to be in great physical shape get that way? More importantly how do they stay lean, strong, toned, healthy and fit? And more importantly how can you have these same great results for yourself?

Well, there are some healthy habits that almost all slim and fit people seem to have in common. You can adopt and copy the habits that these people have and realize the benefits of a healthier, slimmer body for yourself.

1.) They eat lots of good food - No one ever dieted their way to long term fitness and health and a strong, lean shapely body. All truly in-shape people eat and they eat a lot. But the difference between them and overweight, unfit people is that they eat more whole, natural unprocessed foods that include a higher lean protein and they avoid the "fat free" and "lite" foods trap.

They tend to eat more frequently, usually six or seven small meals a day starting with a good breakfast. The result is that they have more stable blood sugar and more consistent energy levels. This results in them being less prone to gaining body fat because they rarely eat more calories in any given meal than their body can utilize.

They also have much more energy to be able to support a proper exercise program that is made up with mainly strength training exercise. This type of training gets them in the best shape in the shortest amount of time.

2.) They have goals - Highly fit, in-shape people always have a fitness or health goal. After all, you can not improve something unless you know what you are trying to improve it to. Those goals can be small or large and ambitious, but in either case they act with a sense of purpose when it comes to their health and physical fitness.

Whether that goal is to maintain their current physique, reduce body fat, gain additional muscle to improve their body shape or increase their endurance or stamina they will always have a goal that they are shooting for. If you ask a fit person what they are currently working on, they will always be able to tell you what their goal is.

And if you observe them exercising, you will be able to sense that they have purpose. They rarely sit still between sets of an exercise and minimize socialization in the gym or during their workout. They always seem to be on the move and 'in the zone'. They will not just be going through the motions; they will be engaged and striving for something.

The takeaway for you - make these habits your own. You don't have to be an athlete or fitness model to take advantage of these two healthy habits. Regardless of your fitness level, experience or personal health and diet goals, you can live a healthier and happier life by adopting some of the same habits as highly-fit people. They will be glad you did.

Learn How to Diet Correctly

How would you like to learn how to diet correctly? If you have been overwhelmed by all the information out there let me show you a few basic components to a healthy diet. First you need to realize that yes it will take a little extra effort at first but once you get into the habit of being healthy it will become second nature. You don't want to make this a boring diet that you wont follow you need to change things up and eat new foods so that you stay interested and yes you can even sneak your favorite foods in there. So now that you realize that it will take a little time and effort to see results and that no you don't have to eat the same thing everyday let me show you the basic of learning how to diet correctly.

So probably the most over looked part of a healthy diet is how many times you really need to eat during the day. In a single day were looking at eating between 6 and 8 meals. Yes that is per day! Now were not going to be eating those meals in full size portions that we consider a normal meal. For example lets say you eat 3 full size meals normally you would want to take those meals and divide them into 6 to 8 meals. so yes were eating more often but in smaller portions.
You can look at this like a car burning fuel the more meals you eat throughout the day the more fuel your body will burn.

So if your like many of us you probably drink some kind of sugary drink that has hundreds of simple sugars just waiting to be stored as fat. Another big factor to a healthy diet is to limit those type of drinks and drink mainly water. The reason to limit these drinks is because the types of sugars they contain, if you don't somehow burn these sugars at the time of consumption they will store as fat and for many of us that can be thousands of calories that could be cut out of your diet!

These are the two most basic steps to a healthy diet. If you start here you will be on your way to a healthier life and ultimately will see results if you keep working at it!

Starvation Diets

The major problem with this assumption is that they ignore the fact that our bodies do not work like that. It is not really a good idea. You should realize that when you starve, you are depriving your body of calories and good nutrition. This will cause you to shut down mentally and physically.

Your body does not function as it should and you end up with more troubles than in the beginning. This happens since your body needs nutrients so it starts to utilize the nutrients which are stored in your muscles, not your body fat. This causes your muscles to disintegrate while your body fat remains intact. This is happens since your body decides to utilize the nutrients based in the muscles and keep on storing fat in your body.

This is a really confusing and a counter intuitive thing. When you start to reduce your food intake, the much needed nutrients to keep your body moving are also reduced. To avoid this, your muscles are used up and not your body fat. This is done since fat is not a really good fuel source.

Starvation triggers your body into thinking you are not going to get food so it will stop using fat and store it so that you can stay warm and hopefully function later on. Due to this, a phenomenon known as skinny fat occurs in which you lose a lot of weight but your body fat stays high. This should never be your aim since this is a very dangerous thing.

Your aim should rather be to get your body toned. There are no quick weight loss schemes. Just as making money it takes time and effort. You will not suddenly lose a lot of weight. Following a starvation diet leads you to lose weight in the short term and gain weight in the long term.

Metabolism Definition - Resting Metabolic Rate

Metabolism is a bodily function that converts the food (calories) we eat into energy. We either burn them immediately for an energy boost, or we save them for later in the form of fat.

If you have a "slow" or less efficient metabolism, it can show in many ways...If you are distressed because your favorite jeans don't fit anymore, your belt doesn't quite reach all the way around and so on. You CAN do something about it and create a healthier and better life for yourself.

However, it doesn't have to be difficult to lose weight and in fact shouldn't mean starving yourself. If you are doing it right, you'll NEVER be hungry.

There are a lot of diet programs out there, and it can be confusing because there are so many. Be careful, though; avoid those "get thin quick" programs that promise excessive weight loss over a very short period of time. Sure, most of them come with testimonials and a lot of advertising, and it may be quite tempting to drop 6 pounds in 24 hours. However, even if it works, it doesn't work for long. You'll note that those folks that dropped all that weight aren't going to be showing up a year later, having kept it off. Why is that so? Because these people have almost always gained back all the weight they lost - and more.

So, the time has come for you to take charge of your body and master your weight. Losing weight is all about the efficiency of your metabolism. Once you fully understand how it works and you can calculate what your "resting metabolic rate" or RMR is, you've already done half the work.

RMR explained...

Metabolism definition - Your resting metabolic rate is the speed at which your body turns calories into fuel even when you're resting and not actively doing anything. Several things influence this resting metabolic rate. For example...

One of the things that influences RMR is our age. You might have noticed that a lot of us tend to gain weight as we get older, and that's because age slows down RMR.

Dieting, too, is bad for RMR because the dieting really ratchets DOWN our metabolism. If we drastically cut back on calorie intake, we're going to lose a few pounds at first, true, but we're also going to slow down our metabolism - quite markedly.

That means when we go off the diet, we'll be gaining back all the weight we lost -- but now, we've done ourselves a disservice because the dieting has slowed down our metabolism, which means that we gain weight much easier. And so, presto, we gain the weight back plus more.

In American vernacular, that's often called "yo-yo dieting." You lose weight, you gain it back faster, you lose again, you gain it back, and so on.

A third problem with drastically cutting calories and therefore rapidly losing a lot of weight in a short period of time can also mean that you lose a lot of muscle. This puts you in a pretty dangerous position, too. You need muscle to function, plus muscles burn significantly more calories than fat. This means that any good "diet" (make that lifestyle) program is going to include exercise. The more you can move your body, tone, and build muscle, the more calories you're going to burn even when you're not doing anything; yes, you can truly "lose weight when you sleep" -- as long as you exercise when you're awake.
