Safe & Sensible Weight Loss

By Scott McQuarrie

Although one can learn state-of-the-art methods for getting and staying in shape, it is entirely possible to forget all the learning and get out of shape quickly. People have different metabolisms and physical attributes, and everyone needs a fitness plan that takes these differences into account. When it comes to weight loss, however, there are some basic facts that apply to everyone.

The rule here is "easy does it"-be careful when setting out to lose weight, and do it with medical advice. Weight loss is accomplished within a broader plan for physical well-being, so all factors come into play, including activity level, workout routines, meal planning and so on. The first basic truth to remember is that weight loss happens when you burn more calories than you consume. This can be accomplished in two general ways: reducing intake and increasing activity.

Forget the fads

If you do reduce your intake, there are some things you can safely let go (sweet rolls, ice cream, the second cheeseburger) but others that you must continue to eat (fruits and vegetables). If you decide to approach weight loss through increased physical activity, whether solo exercise or group sports, make sure you are doing things you can continue over time without risk of injury.

Of course, you can do both as well-reduce intake while increasing activity. A balanced, thoughtful plan along these lines has proven to be the most effective weight loss method of all. In addition, it is not simply about stripping away fat, it is about bringing the body into balance and being physically fit, and establishing a lifestyle that will maintain that balance and fitness.

Normal is as normal does

Read as much as you can, and talk to people who know the subject, including doctors, nurses, physical therapists, nutritionists and personal trainers. Start slow, stay aware of what you are doing, keep track of your progress and remain committed to your goals.

If you have special medical needs, are being treated for chronic illness of any kind or have other "contraindications," you may not know about it without a doctor visit. That is why any dramatic change in your lifestyle needs to be undertaken with good advice, and without resorting to fad methods, unproven diet drinks or other so-called "natural" concoctions. Poison ivy is natural, too, but natural doesn't always mean good or recommended.

Weight loss doesn't happen by itself, it's a byproduct of all your lifestyle choices. Choose healthy over fattening, and active over passive, and you can't lose-except for the fat, because you will lose that.
